Ms. Abu-BakrI teach 8th grade Language Arts. I have been a teacher at Merrill for eighteen years. I earned my B.S. from the University of Nebraska and my M.A. from the University of Colorado.I love writing poetry, and have had some of my poems published in various books. I hope to pass on my love of poetry to my students. This year the students in the district are mandated to follow the Studio Reading/Writing program which provides a two-hour block daily for them to receive intensive instruction in literacy. It is a program which has provided the base for students to make substantial gains in reading and writing. I feel that my instructional program was very successful in the past, as shown by CSAP scores, but I am optimistic that this program will make an even bigger difference.
