Meet Ms. Horgan
I went to Phoenix, Arizona in September,2003 to accept the MENC / Sweet Adeline Award, presented at the Sweet Adelines International Competition and Convention. MENC - The National Association for Music Education is a voluntary, non-profit organization representing all phases of music education in schools, colleges, universities and teacher-education institutions. The MENC/Sweet Adelines Award is given in recognition of a Sweet Adeline member, preferably a member of MENC, who has made outstanding contributions to music education in public schools in the United States. I have been coaching high school girls quartets and I also direct a summer music camp for high school students, in addition to my hectic music schedule at Merrill Middle School. Education never stops! I have been teaching at Merrill for 16 years. Prior to that I taught in the parochial school system in Aurora, Co. for 9 years. I have my Bachelor's of Music Education from the University of Denver, with an emphasis on piano and choral music. I recently completed my Master's of Education, with an emphasis of integrating technology into the classroom. Some interesting facts... I was born in Maquoketa, Iowa and graduated from high school in Keokuk, Iowa. I miss sweet corn, pork tenderloin sandwiches, lightning bugs, the Mississippi River, maple leaves in the fall, and my family who still lives there. I do not miss the humidity, the heat, the droning locusts and their nasty red eyes, or the distance you have to go to go shopping! I am married to Larry Horgan, who is a landscape architect. We have been married 24 years. We have two boys, Zach, a junior at The Art Institute of California in San Francisco, and Greg, a freshman, at the University of Colorado at Denver. I also have my girl, Maggie, a black labrador retriever who is 13 years old. The whole family likes to go camping and fishing up at Red Feathers. Our favorite camping trip was to Yellowstone, where we saw a bear, mama and baby moose, buffalo, elk, and eagles. The family's other favorite trip was to Disney World during Christmas 1999. Lots of fireworks, pictures with Mickey Mouse, visiting Epcot, riding the Tower of Terror were some of the highlights! My favorite things... 1. Spending time with family and friends 2. Singing barbershop music 3. Hanging out with my best friend, Vicki :-) 4. Reading the "Outlander" series 5. Watching every episode of "Survivor" 6. "Titanic" and "Braveheart" 7. Estes Park and our cabin 8. Taking a nap 9. Scrapbooking 10. Watching HGTV Just in case...
